How long does it take to upload a large file?

Upload time is the file size in megabits divided by your upload speed: 10 GB at 20 Mbit/s takes about 67 minutes. One gigabyte is about 8,000 megabits, so multiply gigabytes by 8,000 and divide by your upload speed in Mbit/s to get seconds. Real transfers run a little slower than the line’s headline speed.

Why the receiver often waits twice as long
With an upload service, your upload must finish before the receiver’s download can start, so their wait is your upload time plus their download time. A direct transfer overlaps the two: the receiver downloads while you send, so they are done when you are. See sending without uploading.
