Is there a size limit?
No limit is set. Nothing is uploaded, so there is no storage to fill, and files are written to the receiver’s disk as they arrive rather than held in memory. The largest transfer verified end to end so far is 5 GB; larger files move the same way, and we are testing them now. Sending a 50 GB file.
Do I need an account?
No. Sending and receiving need no account and no app. An account is optional: it keeps a history of what you have shared and holds a paid plan.
Is WispFile free?
Yes. Direct transfers are free and unlimited, because they cost us almost nothing. Paid plans add a relay for networks that block direct connections, custom link names, branding and team features. Pricing.
Do I have to stay online?
Yes. The files come straight from your device, so keep the WispFile tab open until the receiver has them. If either side drops for a while, the download continues from where it stopped once you are both back.
Can WispFile see my files?
No. Files are never stored, and each piece is encrypted with a 256-bit key that lives only in the link, after the #. Browsers never send that part of a link to a server. On the free plan the files never touch our servers at all; on paid plans, if two networks cannot connect directly, the encrypted bytes pass through our relay, which cannot read them either. What happens if the link leaks?
Anyone with the whole link can download while you are sharing. Add a password for a second lock, choose “after 1 download”, or press Stop sharing, which ends the link for good.
Why could the other person not connect?
Some networks, often at offices, hotels or on mobile data, block direct connections between devices. Free links are direct only, so on such a pair of networks they cannot connect; trying another network (mobile data instead of office Wi-Fi, for example) usually helps. Pro and Team fall back to an encrypted relay that passes the bytes along without storing them.
Which browsers work?
WispFile is built for current browsers. It is verified end to end in Chromium-based browsers such as Chrome and Edge, which can also save straight into a folder you pick. Firefox and Safari are going through our test matrix now; they save through the normal Downloads, with several files arriving as one zip.
How is WispFile different from WeTransfer?
WeTransfer uploads your files to its servers, keeps them for a few days, and limits free use (since November 2024 it also needs an account to send). WispFile uploads nothing: the receiver downloads straight from your device while you are online, encrypted with a key WispFile never sees, with no size cap and no account. WispFile vs WeTransfer.
Can several people download at once?
Yes. Each receiver gets their own connection and you see everyone’s progress. For many receivers, turn on “Let receivers share with each other” (swarm mode): the first receivers pass the files on, so you upload them far fewer times.
Can people send files to me?
Yes, with an inbox. Create one on your account page and share its link; anyone can send files through it, straight to your browser, while you have the inbox open.
